Tyree Spraggins: ‘I didn’t expect this’
Tyree spraggers said she felt she had to act as quickly as possible because of the threats she faced.
The US-born athlete said she was “just a scared little girl”.
“I was like, ‘I can’t go on.’
It was really scary,” she said.”
I had to run.
I had to jump out of the car.
I was scared.
I couldn’t go out in public because I was afraid of what was going to happen.”

“When I got out of my car, I thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s crazy,'” she said, adding that she tried to walk away and tried to call her parents, but couldn’t.
“That’s when I realised, ‘OK, this is it.'”
Tyree said she tried calling her grandmother, who lived nearby, but no one answered.
“Then I called my dad, and he’s like, OK, we’ve got to go get you,” she recalled.
“He’s like ‘what do you mean you can’t get out there?’
I’m like, what?
I’m a grown-up, what the fuck am I supposed to do?”
Tyree, who lives in the Chicago suburb of Lakeview, Illinois, said she didn’t realise that the threats were coming from her cousin, whom she had not spoken to since they were little.
“It’s been so stressful, like I’m scared to be anywhere,” she told Al Jazeera.
“And I know my family is not safe, but I know I have to do this, because my cousin has been really bad to me, and my family, and I have nothing to lose.”
Tyrees aunt, Kayla Johnson, said the threats and the constant fear of what might happen were “getting to the point where I can’t even go outside”.
“It has become so overwhelming, and now it’s just so difficult,” she added.
“The reality is that if she has a gun, I don’t know if she would even have a chance.
It’s so much more dangerous now.”
Tyrees cousin, 20-year-old Jaden Yager, was not in the car when the incident occurred.
Johnson said she believed the threats had been made by a man from the United States who wanted to “get revenge” on his family.
“She’s not going to be able to stop this from happening,” she continued.
“If she had a gun to her head, it would be easier for her.”‘
They don’t want to know’When the threats came to Tyree, she and her family decided to take action.
“We’re going to have to find a way to get away,” she explained.
“They don, and they’re not going anyplace.”
Tyres uncle, Chris Johnson, added: “I don’t understand why we can’t leave.
They don’t have the right to take away our property.”
The incident sparked a conversation about police brutality in the United US.
“They didn’t want us to know, and we don’t even know who they are, and the way they’re treating us.
I’m so scared,” she revealed.”
But I just want my brother to know I’m okay.
I don, so I just need him to know that I’m OK.”
She added: “‘I’m sorry for how you felt.
I can help you.
I’ve got some help.
I’ll be back soon.'”
